He started carving and when he finished he had a lure which would dive 12-15 ft. We all know this became the Bagley’s DB3 which set the standards for diving lures. When the demand for a lure which would reach fish in water deeper than the 15 ft. most deep diving lures run became apparent, Lee started carving again. This year Lee Sisson lures introduces the Premium Balsa P -20. Cut from Balsa this lure has the sleek lines, quick, hard thumping action and cosmetic appeal which the Premium Balsa line has become known for. And yes, this lure will dive to an honest 20 ft. The unique diving lip is the key factor to reaching down so deep. It is made from ultra thin, ultra strong circuit board material. This allows the lip to cut through the water easier giving it more depth with less drag. The large square surface area gives more diving plane surface, driving the lure deeper also. Another benefit from this large square lip is it protects the lure, deflecting off wood, making it easier to fish in timber. It weighs nearly 1 oz. making it easy to make long casts which also aid in going deep. ‘When I started this project I had my doubts as to whether 20 ft was reachable with a balsa plug that could be fished without wearing you out” , says Sisson. “But over the years I have learned several things about making lures. I decided to do everything I knew to get depth. The key was the new circuit board lip material, that and a lot of trips to the lake. One of the hardest things was to come up with a way to test the depth. I found that after about 17 or 18 ft. it was hard to tell if you were hitting anything, you didn’t have the feel with all of the bow in the line. I ended up making a rig where I had a line stretched at the desired depths attached to buoys. When the lure would hit the line it would move the buoys and I knew that the lure was reaching that depth. I also found out that you lose 2 ½ to 3 feet in depth going from 10lb to 14lb pound test mono. To reach the 20 ft we used 10 lb with the rod tip held just above the water.” Whether fishing creek channels, rock piles or other deep structure, this weapon will become a staple in the arsenal we use for bass.
